How to Measure Your Shop for Shelving?

It’s essential that you measure your shop accurately when looking to install retail shelving. To be as accurate as possible, you will need to take your measurements in millimetres to ensure the best fit. Splash Shelving is here with some top tips to help you find the perfect sizes.

Each shop is unique but there are plenty of common obstacles to avoid. Before you make a start, you should make note of these which might include:

  • Radiators
  • Pipes
  • Windows
  • Power cables and meters
  • Light switches
  • Structural supports

Tools that you will need:

  • Pen
  • Paper
  • Measuring tape

Step 1 – Measuring your Shop

As most walls tend to be straight, measuring them is not too hard. You just need to remove any doors or windows from the overall measurement as you definitely don’t want any shelves to block these!

  1. Measure the height of the wall from the floor to the ceiling.
  2. To find the width of the wall, start at one end of the wall and measure to the other.
  3. Measure the length and width of any doors, fixtures, or windows. Then also measure the distance from wall to wall.
  4. Measure from the corner to the door frame(s).
  5. Make a note of everything that sticks out into the room, such as switches and pipes.

Step 2 – Take Note of All Obstructions

  1. Mark where all the windows and doors are, as well as which way they open.
  2. Include all areas involved in your project. For example, electrical sockets and any existing plumbing as well as fixed objects such as boilers, radiators, or boxed-in pipes.

With these measurements, shelving experts such as Splash Shelving will have all the information needed to create much better displays for you shop.
